Instructions on how to obtain GenBank sequences for MGAlignIt

Step 1.

First open the NCBI (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) website in a new browser window (Click here for a new browser window with NCBI's website)

Step 2.

Select Nucleotide to search in the top left drop down list and type in your GenBank accession number in the text box to the right. Once done, click on the "Go" button to the right as shown below:

Step 3.

Click on the accession number to view the GenBank record as shown below:

Step 4.

Select "FASTA" from the top left drop down list and click on the "Display" button on the left of the list as shown below:

Step 5.

This will result in a page showing the FASTA formatted sequence. Select all the text that make up the FASTA formatted and select "Copy" from the Edit menubar as shown below:

Step 6.

Then go back to the browser window showing the MGAlignIt page. In the textbox where you are supposed to paste in the sequence, do a right click and select "Paste" from the context menu as shown below:

Step 7.

The FASTA formatted sequence will then be present within the textboxas shown below. You can then perform the same steps for the other sequence.
